CHDI, in partnership with the CT Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the CT Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, launched this training initiative to inform pediatricians and their staff about critical children’s health issues - right in the comfort of their own offices. This model of "academic detailing," based on a successful program in Pennsylvania, brings together a variety of topics under one training umbrella. Currently, there are 3 EPIC training modules: Help Me Grow (early detection of developmental delays), SCAN (recognizing child abuse and neglect), and Oral Health.
While there are currently a variety of individual programs and workshops in the state that offer Continuing Medical Education credits (CME’s) to physicians, there is no comprehensive continuing education system that deals exclusively with issues of child health and development in Connecticut. Furthermore, no CME program attempts to reach other professionals within the health care office who interact with children and families (e.g. nurses and office staff). As a result, research that informs best practices in critical areas of child health and development sometimes take years to move into actual practice.
The EPIC program provides office-based physician education using trained peer professionals to make onsite, in-office presentations about specific issues in child health and development to both physicians and their staff. Two components contribute to the uniqueness of this model:
* Its focus on the education of the entire office team, including nurses, physicians and receptionists, by a practicing primary care physician
* The emphasis on office-based change using clinical information and practical office tools
