CHDI’s Jason Lang and Jeff Vanderploeg co-authored an article, “Outcomes, evidence-based treatments, and disparities in a statewide outpatient children’s behavioral health system” published in Children and Youth Service Review. The article analyzed the effectiveness of outpatient behavioral health treatments for children in Connecticut, including the use of evidence-based treatments (EBTs). Overall, outpatient mental health treatment works, but disparities in outcomes exist for some groups of children. Children who received EBTs showed greater improvement than children who did not receive EBTs and the use of EBTs also reduced disparities in child outcomes by race and ethnicity. The results indicate Connecticut’s use of EBTs is improving child outcomes and has the potential to reduce disparities for children of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.
