Early detection of certain disorders in newborns can help prevent serious long-term health and developmental problems. Connecticut’s hospital-based newborn screening system ensures that all newborns are screened for several metabolic disorders and that results are sent to the primary care provider. For infants identified with a disorder, treatment and long-term follow-up care are coordinated with the infant’s primary care provider.
This training informs pediatric primary care providers about the state’s newborn screening program and discusses the role of primary care. The presentation includes information about the Connecticut Newborn Diagnosis and Treatment Network, a statewide network that responds to all newborn screens that are flagged as out of range, as well as the Connecticut Children’s Leaders in Advanced Solutions in Pediatrics (CLASP) which provides an evidence-based, algorithmic approach to guide referrals following newborn screens.
